This study aimed to explore the parental experience of paediatric hospitalization in
healthcare facilities in the city of Bunia.
A qualitative approach, using phenomenological method was used in paediatric services
of Bunia (Ituri, DRC). Fifty parents were purposively selected until data saturation. Semi
structured interviews were conducted in French, Swahili, or Lingala, recorded with consent,
and supplemented with field notes. Thematic analysis described by Braun & Clarke (2006)
identified themes and sub-themes. Ethical principles were observed, including written consent,
anonymity, and ethics committee approval.
Parents’ experiences were characterized by a combination of positive events,
challenges, and rewarding moments. Key factors enhancing confidence and adaptation included
a welcoming environment, familiarization with medical staff, quality of care, and collaboration
with healthcare providers. Challenges included staff shortages, emotional stress, financial
constraints, and communication barriers. Satisfaction stemmed from attentive care, treatment
effectiveness, child improvement, and positive interactions with staff, with free care for war
displaced families offering crucial relief.
The findings highlight the need to improve patient reception, staff availability, and
context-sensitive communication. Psychological and social support for families, along with
reduced financial burdens for vulnerable populations, are recommended. A holistic approach
would enhance parental well-being and facilitate pediatric recovery.
