This study aimed to determine the performance of commercial and locally prepared
antibiotic discs on strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhi and Echerichia coli. The
experimental method was used to carry out this study. The study population consists of the
antibiotics including Amikacin, Amoxicillin, Azythromicin, Ceftriaxone and Penicillin-G and
Penicillin-V to test the susceptibility of S. aureus strain; Ciprofloxacin, Cloxaciciline,
Doxycylline, Gentamycin for E. coli and S. typhi.
The results showed that Staphylococcus aureus strains are 5% sensitive to antibiotics,
both for commercial discs and for locally manufactured discs. Escherichia coli is 20%
susceptible to locally manufactured disc antibiotics and 5% susceptible to marketed disc
antibiotics. Salmonella typhi is 20% susceptible to marketed disc antibiotics and 25%
susceptible to locally prepared disc antibiotics. In view of the above results, the use of locally
manufactured discs, which are easy to procure because of their attractive prices, may be
encouraged.
